Election Time - India

It is once again time for one of our favourite past times - Elections. I am sometimes amazed by the ability of the election commission to run an election of this magnitude successfully across India. Every time, we are around the elections, we see new "non-political" faces and the debate begins whether it is time for common educated Indians to join the political fray.
There is a discussion running around in our e-groups, which debates the candidature of Shashi Tharoor from Trivandrum. (well, my home town) Being an highly opinionated group of individuals, we seem to have pros and cons for all kinds of situations. The fact that Mr Tharoor is part of the Congress too, makes him a non-neutral candidate to a large extent. While I am in no way a great supporter of the Congress brand of politics (or for that matter the general brand of politics), I was thinking about the basic objectives we want to accomplish through elections. And came to the following conclusion -
1. Have a good and stable governance which can take India ahead
2. Have good candidates elected to the parliament.
The point some times is that in a parliamentary form of democracy, good candidates need not give a good and stable governance. The parties in most cases have the bigger say. Having said that, it is still important to keep both the objectives in mind while voting. Which gains more prominence, is something for the voter to decide. Go Vote!

Introduction

I used to run a personal blog on livejournal.com.(http://www.livejournal.com/users/veira) However China seems to prevent me from accessing the site any more. Whatever the actual reasons behind the non-accessibility were, I decided to start a new blog - The Multi Billion World. This essentially touches base with China and India, with the former being a great insight for me personally in the last 2 years.

In the last week, China has asked for the dollar to be replaced by another global currency standard. (imagine doing business transactions globally in RMB!) Many Indians too carry the dream of being able to pay in INR when they vacation in say Gold Coast or the Mediterranean, in the future! Whatever the future holds, 2009 will be a land mark year in terms of global power shift. Welcome to the Multi Billion World.
